I ran across the idea while skimming through my blogroll a few days ago. A blog feature on this great and quick tutorial explained how to turn placemats into pillows. The yellow placemats used in the tutorial caught my eye and I made a mental note to keep that option in the back of my mind.
Then as I was strolling through Target this week, I saw (squeal!) the exact same yellow placemat. It was $3.99 so I just had to give her tutorial a test run.
From start to finish, this took me maybe 15 minutes per placemat...or is it pillow... And that's while playing ball and building block towers with a toddler at the same time.
There are only three steps.

From start to finish, this took me maybe 15 minutes per placemat...or is it pillow... And that's while playing ball and building block towers with a toddler at the same time.
There are only three steps.
1. Rip out a few stitches from one side of the placemat. I only ripped out just enough to get my hand through the opening
2. Fill the placemat with poly-fil. Be sure to push it all the way into the corners.
3. Close the opening. I used my sewing machine and did a basic stitch (back stitching at the beginning and end), but the original tutorial's author used hot glue.
I've ruined you haven't I? No placemat is safe now!
OH MY GOSH! Going to Target tonight! We are so excited!!! What a wonderful and EASY idea!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! What a great, inexpensive way to change pillows for seasons and holidays. I am so going to make some of these.

I've had those exact placemats in my closet for weeks now, just waiting to turn into pillows! So funny. Great minds must think alike :) After seeing your pillows actually done and on your sofa, I'm feeling motivated to get mine finally put together!
ReplyDeleteJust came over from TT&J. Thank you for sharing this idea. I never would have thought to just stuff the placemats-talk about saving yourself some work (=
ReplyDeleteFound you through Tatertots and Jello. Love your blog! I'm a new follower!
ReplyDeleteJust found you from Tatertots and Jello, love the blog and love that you are fairly new to blogging. I have been thinking of starting one of my own but not sure yet. Thank you for some very inspirational ideas!!
ReplyDeleteOkay that is too funny because I had come across the exact same tutorial and I chose the EXACT same place mats from Target! They are sitting on my really cute (re do of an old bench) white bench. I get complements on them like crazy and people cannot believe how easy it was or that they were just place mats before. So great minds think a like! :) Everyone needs to try these!
ReplyDeleteSo I had to post and tell you how funny it was for me to see your pillows on here as I glance over at the exact same ones sitting in my house. ;) Love Them!
this is awesome! what an easy and cheap thing to give as a gift too! great idea to give teachers!
ReplyDeleteCrazy!! I used those EXACT same yellow placemats as pillows a few months ago....but I don't think I ever got around to blogging about it. Great minds, huh? I love them in your living room!
ReplyDeleteCute idea! I'll have to keep an eye out for cute placemats now. : )
ReplyDeleteLove it, where did the gray placemat come from? Its the exact color scheme I have looking for.
ReplyDeleteThe gray one is actually more of a brown linen look. I don't want you to be disappointed with the colors after you hunt it down. I got it from Target in the placemat section.
